چکیده

In this paper, an ultrasonic shear wave reflection method was adopted to mimic the microstructural evolution of hydrating Portland cement pastes with different water/cement-ratios (0.35, 0.5 and 0.6) cured under a constant temperature of 25°C. The reflection coefficient measured with this technique was correlated to microstructural parameters of the cement pastes. The application of numerical simulation has shown that the ultrasonic wave reflection technique can be used to efficiently monitor the microstructural evolution of cementitious materials.

Early Age Properties of Portland Cement Pastes Investigated with Ultrasonic Shear Waves and Numerical Simulation

In this paper, the correlation of reflection loss measured by an ultrasonic shear wave reflection method and the microstructure in cement-based material is investigated. Three cement pastes (Portland cement type I) with different water-cement ratios (0.35, 0.50 and 0.60) cured at 25 °C were examined. The ultrasonic shear wave reflection factor (WRF) was measured by the wave reflection technique...

Nondestructive Monitoring of Setting and Hardening of Portland Cement Mortar with Sonic Methods

The setting and hardening process of concrete is considered to be the most critical time period during the life of a concrete structure. Previous research has been conducted on an ultrasonic wave reflection method that utilizes a steel plate embedded in the concrete to measure the reflection loss of shear waves at the steel-concrete interface. The reflection loss has been shown to have a linear...

Ultrasonic propagation through hydrating cements

Hydraulic cements develop mechanical strength and low permeability as a result of hydration, which involves chemical reactions between water and the anhydrous compounds present in the cement. Solid hydration products form both at the surfaces of the cement particles and in the pore space by nucleation and aggregation. As a result, the solid phase becomes highly connected and the material transf...

Piezoceramic Element Design and Fabrication for Ultrasonic Transducer of Gas Meter

Ultrasonic transducers play a significant role in generating and receiving the acoustic waves in ultrasonic flowmeters. Depending on the required accuracy, the ultrasonic transducers can be installed either in one pair or more in an ultrasonic flowmeter. The main part of an ultrasonic transducer is its piezoceramic element. In this work, four piezoceramic elements with different diameter to thi...

Theory of Numerical Methods for Computer Simulation of Ultrasonic Waves Passing through the Nonlinear Flaws

In recent years new methods of nonlinear non-destructive testing (NNDT) have been developed. When ultrasonic waves are passing through the dangerous micro-heterogeneities (microcracks, debondings, delaminations and microstructural material damages) modification of the acoustic contact area between the opposite surfaces of these heterogeneities takes place. Nonlinear distortions of the ultrasoni...
